Phan Thiet fun for Tet

Phan Thiet has announced the cultural and sports events for this year’s Lunar New Year 2011.

From Jan. 30 until Feb. 8 (the 27th of the 12th lunar month until the sixth of the first lunar month) there are numerous music performances, sports activities, folk games and lion dances at most of the province’s 18 wards.

Bien Xanh theater group will hold special music galas in the communes of Tien Thanh, Phong Nam and Thien Nghiep. Tien Loi – Tien Thanh Tourist Area will have a fireworks display on Lunar New Year’s Eve. After the 15-minute fireworks, a music performance named “Chao Xuan” (Welcoming the Spring) will be held at Nga Bay Stage and a music gala at Nguyen Tat Thanh Square.

The traditional boat race on Ca Ty River will be on the second of the first lunar month and the Mui Ne sand hill run will be on the forth of the first lunar month. At resorts and hotels in Phan Thiet, there’re banquets to welcome Lunar New Year, folk music performances, lion dances, Cham dances and traditional martial arts.

Saturday coffee for Saigon intellectual set

Where do you go on Saturdays? Some spend time with family, while others share their weekends with friends or see movies. But if you want to talk about what’s going in the world, or just in your head, you are welcome to join the other intellectuals for a deep and meaningful’ at Ca phe thu Bay (Saturday Coffee). The cafe was designed to meet the demands of intellectuals who want a space to talk about music, literature, books, architecture, arts, cinema or theater.

Located at 37 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, HCMC’s District 1, Ca phe thu Bay has become a weekend regular meeting place. The café was given its name because every Saturday morning, it hosts programs on different aspects of the arts. Every Sunday at 8.30 p.m., the coffee shop screens a couple of good Vietnamese or foreign movies. Late evenings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, are for chamber music featuring pieces by Bach and Mozart etc.  

The manager of Ca phe thu Bay is a famous musician, Duong Thu, who is known for Vietnamese love songs. “I choose the music for Ca phe thu Bay,” he said. The selection  is mostly easy-listening. There is also a library containing over 200 book titles covering subjects such as philosophy, fiction, research, literature, arts, cinema, music, science and architecture. The library has a collection of 4,000 compact discs of Vietnamese classic films.

Thu said, Hanoi has Lam coffee shop for artists, while HCMC has internet cafés, book cafés at Phuong Nam bookstores, and Ca phe thu Bay. It’s a celebration of the Saigonese art of conversation. The shop is decorated in Vietnamese style with wooden furniture and a lotus pond at the entrance.

Dang Le Nguyen Vu, chairman of Trung Nguyen Corporation, which cooperates with the café, said he was considering setting up more such spaces in town.

Welsh choir perform for kids charity

Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir will return to HCMC for a charity performance two years after their last appearance in the city.

The show named “Songs for a Brighter Future” will be at the Caravelle Hotel in HCMC on October 16.

The all-male choir, founded in 1978, is a group of amateur singers whose music celebrates the folk sounds of Wales. Many of their performances serve charitable purposes. The group performed in London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2004 and 2008, and the choir sang on the Great Wall of China in 2009.

The evening’s entertainment gets underway at 6:30pm with music by a chamber music group and other performers, and a painting exhibition and silent auction in the hotel’s Opera Rooms. After a short presentation by representatives from Saigon Children’s Charity and a short fashion show, the choir will perform two sets while guests enjoy a set menu dinner prepared by the Caravelle’s kitchens.

The proceeds of the event will go to Saigon Children’s Charity and its educational initiatives. The funds will be raised through both entrance ticket sales and sponsorships. Tickets to the event cost VND1.5 million per person and can be booked via mcm@caravellehotel.vnn.vn.
