Lake reflects the heavens in An Giang

Bung Binh Thien (Peaceful Lake of Heaven), is a fresh-water lake in An Giang Province that is popular for weekend getaways.

Located in An Phu District, in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang, the lake links the communes of Khanh Binh, Nhon Hoi and Quoc Thai. Fed by Binh Di River and Hau River, the natural lake is tranquil all year round.

It covers about 200-300 hectares and is four meters deep in the dry season. As it is connected to the Mekong River system its width triples in the rainy season, with the depth increasing up to seven meters. It is the largest fresh water lake in the southwest.

The stillness of Bung Binh Thien reflects the sky while water-lilies and lotus sway in the wind.

Bung Binh Thien is home to many ethnic Cham people who have maintained their amazing culture and traditional festivals such as Roya Phik Trok and Ramadan. On full-moon nights, young couples often take a boat and sing love songs.

The lake plays host to local boat races and water games in August. Tourists are welcome.

In the chill of the seventh morning of Lunar New Year on Wednesday, thousands of locals and tourists went to watch the trekking contest to Ta Cu Mountain in Ham Thuan Nam District, Binh Thuan Province.

The contest, organized for the fifteenth time, attracted 250 male and female athletes from Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Binh Thuan provinces. The course covered 6,300 meters for males and 5,300 meters for females, of which are 2,300 steps to Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda.

After 40 minutes, Ta Thanh Xinh in Binh Thuan won in the men’s open division, while Nguyen Ngoc Quang in Dong Nai and Tran Cong Binh in Binh Thuan came second and third, respectively. In women’s division, Nguyen Thi Diem My of Binh Phuoc won the first prize while Nguyen Thu Hiep of Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Nguyen Thi Dung in Binh Phuoc pocketed the second and third prizes.

Binh Thuan and Ba Ria-Vung Tau won the team prizes.

In the individual division for men, Ta Thanh Xinh won, Tran Van Cong and Nguyen Hoang Duy came second and third. In the individual division for women, Huynh Ngoc Bao Tuyen came first while Nguyen Thi Hong Lin won the second and Huynh Thu Thu Thuy won the third prize.

Phan Thiet City and Tuy Phong District of Binh Thuan Province won team prizes.

Int’l yacht festival promotes yachting tourism

Yacht teams from 20 countries and territories in the world will take
part in the 2011 International Yacht Festival which will be held in Mui
Ne, in the central province of Binh Thuan from March 17-20.

Themed
“Yacht, Sea, Sand and Sun,” the second yacht festival will include
interesting sports, tourism and entertainment activities such as a yacht
exhibition, a yacht performance by professional athletes, plus
international music performances with the participation of artists from
the Czech Republic, the Republic of Korea, Australia and Russia
and arts performances from Vietnam.

There will be a
seminar on building a brand name for Vietnamese sea activities, along
with advertising and developing yachting amusements in Vietnam.

At
a press briefing in Hanoi on Jan. 20, Deputy Chairman of the Binh
Thuan provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Thu said the organisation
of the festival is to popularise Mui Ne beach attractions to domestic
and foreign tourists and develop Vietnam’s sea tourism.

The
event is also a chance for international yacht groups to consider
investing and building yacht production plants for export in Binh Thuan
to provide for the Asian market.

Boasting a 192 km coastal
line, Binh Thuan province boasts abundant sea resources with beautiful
beaches, historical and cultural monuments and captivating traditional
festivals which are suitable for sea tourism development.

The International Yacht Association ranks Mui Ne as one of the best beaches for sailing in Asia.

Mui
Ne welcomed 2.5 million tourists, 15 percent of whom were foreigners,
in 2010. Binh Thuan province aims to attract 3.5 million visitors –
including 500,000 foreigners – to the beach by 2015./.

Get festive for Tet at Cham cultural center

The Cham Cultural Exhibition Center in Binh Thuan Province will host a week of cultural events for Tet (Lunar New Year) from January 30 to February 8.

The highlight of the program is the exhibition of royal costumes of the Cham imperial family. See what the Cham kings, queen, princes and princess were wearing – including crowns, seals and swords and betel nut making sets. Also see costumes, musical instruments, objects and products that Cham people used in festivals.

Apart from exhibits of traditional craft villages like brocade weaving and ceramics, the center will also display farming tools such as buffalo carts, fish traps and stone jewelries plus a collection of stone statues of Aspara dancers, Genesa, Avalo Kitecvara Gods, a lion, Linga-Yoni and many documents written in Cham language.

Brocade weavers and pottery makers will demonstrate for visitors, so guests can join contests. Learn how to cook at Cham cake making displays or just enjoy a free cake.

Rija Nugar ( New Year Festival) and folk artistic performances will be on every night during the festival week.

The Cham artist troupe from Bac Binh District will perform Saranai pan-pipe, Yin-Yang couple dance, Po Jija dance, Vai Chai singing and many kinds of ethnic Cham dance and singing.

The center is in Phan Hiep Commune, Bac Binh District, Phan Thiet City.

Wishing you a Russian Christmas at Tan Cang

The riverside Tan Cang Tourist Park will organize the Russian Food Festival for Christmas from 5:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m, December 24 to 26.

Around 60 Russian dishes many of them grilled will be served with Russian Fifth Ocean beer, at the park that is next to Saigon Bridge in Binh Thanh District.

Chiem Thanh Long, director of Binh Quoi Tourist Village, which manages Tan Cang, told the Daily the tourist village has invited master Russian chef, Sarhat Nabioglu Khalivov to run the kitchen.

“He has been training our chefs for a month,” he said.

This is the first time that Binh Quoi Tourist Village has organized a foreign food festival instead of promoting local food and culture.

Long said the tourist village would hold the Russian Food Festival every year. “HCMC has many programs to promote European and Chinese gastronomy so we want to bring a new food culture of Russia to Saigonese,” he said.

A quiet island get-away near Nha Trang

The white sandy beaches and coral reefs of Binh Ba island are only a short motorbike and boat ride from Cam Ranh Township in the central coast province of Khanh Hoa.

The coral island presents a change of pace from the province’s bustling capital, the beach resort town of Nha Trang.

To get to the island, go to Cam Ranh bus station and take a motorbike taxi for VND10,000 to Ba Ngoi Wharf. From the wharf, there is a boat to Binh Ba at 10 a.m. for VND10,000 per person and VND5,000 per student. There are two boats that head back to the mainland - at 5 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Nom Beach is a quiet little stretch of smooth sand and very blue water. Along the beach are some rocks, where it is nice to sit and watch the waves. Locals use the beach in summer for bathing and often go there at night when the moon is full for small parties.

The path from Nom Beach to Chuong Beach passes wild flowers, colorful snails and rocky outcrops with small caves. If you take your snorkel and goggles to Chuong Beach, you can see many colorful corals in the sea. There are also a lot of bird nests on the island making it interesting for nature enthusiasts.

A short hike up the hill there are ruins of an old French military base. The top of the hill has beautiful sunset views.

Most of the island residents are fishermen. Shrimp is the main catch.

There are very few if any facilities for tourists on Binh Ba, so it’s important to prepare a good picnic lunch or take a tent if you want to stay the night. Otherwise you can eat at some small restaurants and ask one of the locals if you could stay the night. The beach, however, is a great place to camp and have a barbecue.

Get fired up about pottery at Ceramic Festival

The “Ceramic Festival of Vietnam – Binh Duong in 2010” is underway at Go Dau Stadium in Thu Dau Mot Town in Binh Duong Province till September 8.

The festival has 600 booths of ceramics and fine arts from about 70 enterprises around the country. Twenty one traditional ceramics and pottery villages which have been making ceramics for hundreds of years are also represented. The villages include Bat Trang in Hanoi, Phu Lang in Bac Ninh, Chu Dau in Hai Duong, Phuoc Tich in Thua Thien-Hue, Thanh Ha in Quang Nam, Hoa Vinh in Phu Yen, Bau Truc in Ninh Thuan, Bien Hoa in Dong Nai, Lai Thieu in Binh Duong and Mang Thit in Vinh Long.

Ceramic makers are promoting their products to local and foreign customers at the festival, while discussing the balance between traditional pottery making and using modern technology.

At the festival, there will be a ceramic making contest, seminar and exhibitions on ceramics.

Seven pottery works have been registered for Vietnamese records, of which three works by Minh Long 1 Company including Cup Hon Viet (Vietnamese soul’s cup), Chen Ngoc Van Lang (Van Lang pearl bowl) and Cup Sen Vang (Golden Lotus Cup), the work Quoc Binh Thang Long (Thang Long peaceful nation) by Cuong Phat Company, Lu Thien Dia (Jar of heaven and earth) by Thanh Trung pottery firm, Den Gom (Pottery lamp) by Thuong Nguyen pottery company and Dia Cau (Globe) by Tan Toan Phat Company. All works are made by traditional methods.

Off the beaten track to Binh Dinh’s beaches

When people mention Binh Dinh, they think of the land of martial arts. However, Binh Dinh is endowed with many spectacular landscapes, historical and cultural sites and stunning beaches.

Most beaches in Binh Dinh have white sand and only a few tourists or tourist services. Coming along National Road 1A from Hanoi through Quang Ngai Province you will pass golden Sa Huynh Beach.

The coastal road is scattered with salt fields, shrimp farms and long beaches. When you arrive in Binh Dinh the  beaches most popular with local and foreign tourists in Binh Dinh are Lo Dieu and Tan Thanh.

Crescent shaped Lo Dieu Beach is located at Lo Dieu Hamlet in Hoai My Commune, Hoai Nhon District. The two kilometer long beach has some small waves and can be reached by car through a steep pass in the two hills behind it. Before the road was built the only access was by boat. It’s quiet most of the year because of the remoteness but can get busy on holidays and some weekends.

From Lo Dieu Beach head south about 50 kilometers, past Tra O Lagoon, and you will find Tan Thanh beach in Tan Thanh Hamlet, Cat Hai Commune, Phu Cat District.

This tucked away treasure of a beach is often deserted without a single human foot print. On Tan Thanh Beach there are many casuarinas trees so it is ideal for camping, the moonlit nights there are beautiful. Both beaches are popular destinations for locals and tourists during the hot summers.

It takes about one hour to go to Quy Nhon City by bus. As there aren’t not any hotels and restaurants on the beaches, some of the locals will be happy to put up travelers for the night.
