A strip of shops  in Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street in District 5 specialize in selling Christmas decorations with an extensive range in different colors and materials. Lengths of gold/silver tinsel cost about VND10,000–12,000, with the latest styles for VND17,000.  Boxes of six colorful Christmas baubles are priced from VND20,000 to VND30,000. The Christmas trees displayed along Le Hong Phong Street in HCMC’s District 5 are also selling well. A medium size Christmas tree without decorations is about VND250,000 and from VND480,000 to VND700000 for decorated trees with Christmas baubles and tinsel.

Although the Christmas-decoration seller streets this year are quite busy, its been a bit slower than last year.

In some famous areas that sell Christmas products such as Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street (District 3), Kim Bien Market (District 5) and even Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street (District 5), the sales are much less than previous years,  down about 20% according to some shops.

Although the Christmas market has cooled down this year, the streets of Saigon are colorfully festooned for the many shoppers and onlookers to enjoy. Pilgrimage to Cau Mountain

The statue of Bodhisattva at Thai Son Pagoda at the foot of Cau Mountain- Photo: Dang Hoang Tham
The traditional practice of taking pilgrimages in Vietnam has become a popular tourism product. The stillness of sacred places, while the smoke from burning incense curls upwards, brings the focus back to the rudiments of life, easing daily stresses and woes and instilling peace and reverence for the soul.

Cau Mountain in Dinh Thanh Commune, Dau Tieng District, Binh Duong Province, is one of the popular destinations for pilgrims near HCMC.

When you first arrive at the base of the mountain, you will see Thai Son Pagoda that was built in 1998 on five hectares. The pagoda has a tower and a 12-meter-high statue of Bodhisattva. It is extremely busy during festival times.

After seeing the pagoda, visitors should head to the rear where the stairs to the mountain top begin. The 1,000 stone steps zigzag upwards, shaded by trees and lined by flowers and boulders. Halfway up the mountain is a shop selling snacks and water and some hammocks where tourists can take a rest and recharge for the next 500 steps.

On the top is a 300 year old tree and a small temple dedicated to the worship of “Cau Bay” who locals believe can protect them and bring them luck.

Looking down is the 27,000 hectare Dau Tieng Lake. The lake, located in Phuoc Minh Commune in Tay Ninh Province’s, Duong Minh Chau District, is the largest irrigation reservoir in Vietnam with a capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters, enough for 63,000 hectares of farmland in Tay Ninh and HCMC plus 40, 000 hectares in the provinces of Binh Duong and Long An.

Near the foot of the mountain is a thundering waterfall that crashes into Than Tho Lake below.

To reach the lake, tourists can follow National Highway No.13 to Thu Dau Mot Town in Binh Duong Province. At the second highway toll station on Binh Duong Boulevard, turn right on Nguyen Chi Thanh Street (744 Street) and follow it for 30 kilometers then go right at the T-junction of Thanh Tuyen Commune in Ben Cat District. This will take you through Dau Tieng Town of Dau Tieng District and keep going straight for another seven kilometers.

Singaporean cuisine strikes southern metro

Singaporean cuisine strikes southern metroMs. Thuy Linh, the chef and owner of the Ech Xanh (Green Frog) Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City has been surprised, of late, by the increasing number of patrons ordering her restaurant’s namesake specialty.

At Linh’s District 1 restaurant, the little croakers are served fried with salted egg, stir-fried with vegetables and curry or sliced into pomelo salad.

Most patrons order the traditional frog porridge which runs between VND70,000-180,000.

In Singapore, the dish is prepared using only the best rice and freshly killed frogs. The fresher the meat, the better the dish will absorb the rich flavors of the stew base - garlic, shallot, dark soy sauce, chili, sugar, pepper and ginger. The ingredients are combined with the frog meat and stewed until a rich stew is produced.

Customers can enjoy Singaporean delicacies at the following restaurants in HCMC:

Red House79 Ngo Thoi Nhiem Street, District 3

Tel: (08) 3 933 3399

Ech Xanh(Green Frog) Restaurant
245/19 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1

Tel: (08) 6 652 9350

Fragrance - Singapore Barbecued Meat Store144 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1

Tel: (08) 3 925 9656

Lion City141 Nguyen Duc Canh Street, District 7

Tel: (08) 5 412 3331, (08) 2 210 1097

In a separate pot, the chef slow-cooks a light porridge of fragrant glutinous rice and tops it off with chopped green onions.

The sheer variety of frog on offer at Linh’s place stands as a testament to the versatile nature of the tiny nation’s cuisine.

“Singapore is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society,” Linh told Thanh Nien Weekly. Indeed, the country’s native Malay traditions have been informed by Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and English influences.

When dining out in HCMC, keep your eyes open for Singaporean chilli crab, Hainanese chicken rice, Rojak (fruit salad), fried carrot cake (steamed rice flour and white radish, fried with egg and garnished with spring onions), Roti Prata (a type of Indian pancake), Hokkien Mee (stir-fried noodles), Char Kway Teow (noodles with soy sauce, bean sprouts, sausages, fish cakes and cockles), Mee Siam (rice noodles in spicy, sweet and sour light gravy) and Bak Kut Teh (pork ribs simmered in herbs).

For Linh’s part however, you haven’t had Singaporean cuisine until you’ve sampled frog porridge.

Where to eat it

People can enjoy numerous delicacies from “the fine country” right here in HCMC.

Seafood lovers should head straight to the Red House which belongs to the owners of the famous Long Beach seafood restaurant on the East Coast Parkway.

Their repertoire includes fried crab with chilli sauce, Canadian elephant trunk snail, and steamed Scottish fingernail snails sautéed in garlic.
